You’ve been in your current home for a while, and now it’s time to pack it all up, hit the road and settle down somewhere else. It sounds simple, but when it comes time to move, things are rarely that easy. Organization is a key part to any successful move. Consider this common scenario: You pack your things from the old house, seemingly in some sort of order, only to open the boxes in your new home to find that nothing is where you thought you put it. How could this be? The good news, however, is that you can make your move easier. Here are four moving organization tips you can use throughout your moving process.

1. Gather a tool basket.

When getting your things ready for the move, you might find yourself roaming from room to room packing things here and there instead of honing in on one area at a time. If you find yourself doing this, it’s no problem. All you need to do is create a tool basket filled with the things essential for packing. Remember things like scissors, tape, packing labels and markers. Place them all in a basket with a handle and you can easily walk from room to room with it.

2. Make a key.

We’re not talking about a spare key for the new house. Take some time to create a master key that shows you what you put where. Make it easier by color coordinating. Find some colorful stickers to stick on each of the boxes. Red for kitchen, blue for master bathroom, orange for master bedroom, green for guest bathroom, etc., and then use a label to say exactly what is inside. For example, use a blue sticker for the master bedroom and then on the side write: Elizabeth’s Books. That way, you’ll know where it came from, where it’s supposed to go and what’s in it. Be sure to write – on your master key – which color sticker goes with each room in your home.

3. Create a survival box.

The survival box is just what it sounds like: a box containing the essential belongings you need to function somewhat normally every day. This could include blankets, your kids’ favorite stuffed animals, your coffeemaker, your computer and a few tools you’ll need during the move.

4. Pack the truck.

As you pack the truck, keep in mind that the first things you put in the truck will be the last things to be taken out. Be sure to pack the most essential boxes in the truck last, so you’ll be able to unpack them quickly.

Moving from your old home to your new one doesn’t have to be an unorganized mess. With these moving organization tips, you’ll be packed, unpacked and moved in before you know it.
